Man, I’m glad I don’t deal with credit card companies any more! I’m not here to bad mouth these guys but it does reinforce to me why I found other options

Man I’m glad I don’t have to deal with credit card companies any more. Sunday evening I was catching up on my laziness and decided to watch an old episode of Frontline titled the Secret History of the Credit Card. No, I don’t normally make a habit of relaxing to episodes of highly biased news programs from 2004 but I figured you FinancialFreaks might benefit from my pain – so I took one for the team!

The program itself started out by revealing the history of how credit card companies positioned themselves to take advantage of a lack of regulation in some states. They then went on to discuss how the companies then came to exploit the lack of regulation to take care advantage of the consumer/borrower (told you they were biased…but then again so am I). I’m not going to suck the life out of you with the intricacies if the credit card business here today but I will say the more I pay attention to the business the more I wonder, aside from the stock holders, who is really benefiting from their practices. The one thing I found surprising was how many ex-credit card industry professionals came out to speak against industry practices.

Now I’m not here to completely bad mouth these guys but it does reinforce to me why I choose to find other options than credit cards. Remember these consumers, including myself, signed up for this ride and if you don’t understand the contract maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to sign on the line. I am personally a share holder in several banks through my mutual funds so I love it that people several million people can’t control themselves almost to the point of bankruptcy then manage to fight their way back through 30% interest rates and late fees then immediately jump back on board for another trip. To that I say….YEEHAW boys! Let’s ride these hogs all the way to retirement on the backs of out of control consumers trying like hell to save the embarrassment of a low credit score! Keep it up suckers, daddy needs a new Maserati!

So if you have 40-ish minutes of your life you won’t regret spending on the couch and you have an odd fascination with money, business & credit click here: FRONTLINE: Secret History of the Credit Card or even better read my Credit Card Debate page to learn how you don’t have to ever deal with them if you don’t want to.

I received call from Military Wife about her Citibank card interest rate being raised from 13% to 29%. Her call sent Vinny Financio into action!

Last night I received phone call from Military Wife about her Citibank credit card interest rate being raised from 13% to 29% interest. Actually if I remember correctly her exact words were…

the %!<&\# at Citi just jacked my interest rate right after I made the stupid payment

Her call sent Vinny Financio into action and prompted me to snoop around the inter-web a bit. Little did I know I would find out that Citigroup has also started charging annual fees to card holders who don’t put more than a specific amount on their cards, typically $2,400 per year. So let me get this straight…If I use a card you charge me, (I get that) If I don’t use my card you charge me (thats the part I don’t get!).

Okay that’s not really true, I do get it they are charging customers more fees. That’s what they do, that’s what their consumer business model is based on. The part I don’t get is why do they still have customers? You know the saying though…

you can lead an idiot to water but you can’t make him drown himself

It amazes me what people are willing to put up with. Luckily though Military Wife, due to her recent financial progress, was able to close the account and I doubt she was able to contain her ex-Marine Corp potty mouth when she told them what she thought about their new programs. I guess at this point for those that are willing to accept this treatment more power to them. Somebody has to get bent over the bar to keep those bank stocks in my mutual funds afloat for another 30 years. Personally I’ll take my own road on this one.

By eliminating debt you free cash to use for retirement and wealth building. Don’t believe me? Swing by the old people farm and ask what they'd do differently

As a follow up to my post I Call a Do-over I wanted to discuss how my goal of a Zero Credit Score and my actions of living with no consumer debts will affect my life in the future. There are two reasons I decided to eliminate my debts and work to live on less than I make.

The first reason is because this simplifies my life greatly in several ways. One I don’t have the stress of debt hanging over me every minute of every day. Second I don’t have many bills to keep track of and pay every month (I currently pay 8 bills each month and half of those are deducted automatically).

The second reason is the big one for me. Taking debts out of the equation means my income is no longer being used to support those debts. Not paying these payments means my income is now free to invest, spend & save. When debt is sucking your income out of your hands as fast (or faster) than you earn it you cripple yourself. You spend your energy and, more importantly, your time trying to climb a mountain you have the weight of payment books trying to drag you back down. You spend your days trying to make money for someone else – I don’t like that feeling.

So by eliminating debt payments you simplify your life and free up energy and cash that can be used towards more productive goals like retirement planning and building wealth. How hard would it be to stash away 15% of your income towards retirement if you had no car payments, credit card payments, or student loan payments? If you don’t believe me calculate your debt to income ratio then swing by the local old people farm and ask them what they would do differently if they had the chance. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to give you their take on credit cards and car payments.

By wiping out my debts I’m able to invest because I have more available money. Don’t try to do too many things at once pay off debt then save like crazy

It’s pretty easy to pick some goals then get off your butt and begin working towards them. It’s also just as easy to focus on too many goals at once. In a previous post Take Aim & Kill It I talk about focusing all your financial resources at your smallest debt and working to eliminate it as rapidly as possible. Here I want to talk about why focusing on your debts now is important to reaching those larger goals further in the distance.

A contractor friend once told me this quote:

When you come across an electrical problem and a plumbing problem…don’t try to fix them both at the same time!

In other words don’t try to do too many things at once. I decided I would be better served by focusing on debts now which has allowed me to focus more on financing my retirement and reaching those larger goals. I once heard a story about a apartment maintenance man that bought his employer’s apartment complex with cash and managed to retire with over $3 million in the bank years later (that story could be total B.S. but I did hear it). Well the story goes like this…He saved his butt off and even though he wasn’t making a ton of money over time he managed to save up enough dough to buy the small apartment complex he worked at and began creating some wealth. That’s pretty much the story. Instead of spending his money he saved his money and as the story goes eventually had enough dough to make a big fat real estate purchase. My guess is this person was a pretty simple dude and probably kept himself out of debt (I don’ see any other way he could really save up a ton of money like this). The obvious advantage though is that he was able to use his income to build something instead of paying for crap he bought in the past + interest.

Even if the story I heard was total B.S. the theory’s still valid. Freeing up your income by clearing your debts will allow you to stash away more money and collect interest instead of paying interest. Do that long enough and large enough and you could eventually turn that stack of money into investments to replace your income and build some wealth. In my post I Call a Do-over I talk about some other advantages to freeing yourself from your everyday debts. As long as your income keeps going towards interest payments on credit cards and cars its going to be hard to use this money for much of anything else (it’s hard to save it if you don’t really get to keep it). So by wiping out my debts I’m now able to save and invest money much more aggressively because I actually have more available money now.

I’m a long way from paying cash for my an apartment building but I’m a whole lot closer now that my money stays with me at the end of the month. Freeing up my income has now given me access to the one tool I need to begin building some wealth, my income.

If you were able to free yourself up from monthly debt payments what would you do with all that money?

The reality is you only have the opportunity to make so much money during your life. No matter what there is only so much money you'll have access to.

The reality is you only have the opportunity to make so much money during your life. No matter what career path you choose, no matter how much you get paid, not matter what your investments return, no matter what you inherit, no matter how totaly awesome your blog is!…there’s only so much money you’ll have access to during your lifetime.

I was thinking about this the other day when I heard two ladies complaining about their money issues while they were sitting in Starbucks drinking two $4-ish cups of coffee. You can‘t really complain about not having enough for retirement while you’re sucking down eight bucks worth of coffee (well you can but no one will really care). Even worse I went to lunch recently with a friend who was complaining about how he was broke. That’s not the annoying part though; the annoying part was that he was complaining about being broke while we were driving in his $46,000 Lexus GS350.

My point here is that in both of these cases these people were likely thinking more short term than long term or their problems really weren’t as much of a concern as they were saying it was. Either way I’m fine with it, it’s not my money they’re spending. Though this is something I think about from time to time when I’m making spending and saving decisions. Remember you only get so much money into your life. If you don’t believe me ask an older person I’m sure they’ll tell you what they think about it the idea of infinite money. Ask them if they’d take a do-over if they had the chance. Ask them if they would make spending and saving decisions differently if they could.

So the next time you hit “4-bucks” to grab a mocha or stop by the Lexus dealer to browse think about the fact that you only get so much money between now and the end of this road trip and consider how your decisions today may fit in and affect your life a little further down the road. If you’re okay with it at that point so am I just don’t take me to Starbucks in your new Lexus and complain about how your broke because I likely won’t care too much at that point. Don’t worry though….I’ll still let you buy my coffee

If you could turn back time how would you have planned differently for retirement? Lets see what the old folks have to say....

Young people knows how to run fast but old people knows the way -unknown

A survey of over a of over 1100 people ages 62-75 were posed a retirement question that only they have the experience necessary to answer. No matter how many finance blogs or books you’ve read, and no matter how many classes you’ve taken…nothing you have done to date, unless you‘re retired, will give you the experience and life lessons required to answer the following question:

If you could turn back time how would you have planned differently for retirement?

56% would have started saving earlier

39% would have allocated more money towards retirement

27% would put money into safer investments

7% would put more into riskier investments

5% would have used a professional advisor

I found the results interesting because the two biggest I shoulda’s were behavior based mistakes and not really what I’d call investment mistakes. The two biggest mulligans they would take had little to nothing to do with investment proficiency and everything to do with the actual task of just getting the retirement savings in place and growing. So I’m thinking no matter what your situation may be right now it’s a good time to get about the business of putting yourself into a position where you can take the advice of these old timers and get things moving for your future. Imagine if you not only were able to run fast but you also knew the way.

So now that you know what the people “living the dream” have to say about their retirement savings what steps are you going to take to heed their advice? Or are you going to look back in a few years and repeat these same survey answers to the next crowd?

So we we're discussing what is a manageable amount of debt. After a fair amount of research on Debt to Income ratios here are the numbers I came up with

A coworker of mine isn’t quite buying into the whole “eliminate all your debts so you can easily afford to fund you retirement plans and build wealth” idea. So we we’re discussing what is a manageable amount of debt if you’re not going to suck it up, focus, and go all the way and instead take a more half-assed approach and just sort of eliminate some of your debts (most likely temporarily though). I decided that I would look into the numbers for him anyway because any money discussion can be a good discussion for most and it can’t hurt to get a better idea of what many feel is normal debt (well broke people call it normal).

After a fair amount of un-reliable research on personal Debt to Income ratios here are some numbers I came up with – remember your home mortgage payment is also included in these numbers, no cheating here

45% or higher debt to income – Things are scary (you probably already knew that). You are walking too close to the edge and some drastic measures should be taken to address the issue.

35% to 45% debt to income - You’re still walking close to the edge but not quite as close as above. Don’t slip up here though since you likely have no cash cushion you’re one mis-step away from stumbling into serious trouble. Now is the time to make some changes while you still have a little breathing room.

30% to 35% debt to income - You’re probably feeling like you’re in pretty good control of things compared to your peers and lucky you they’re offering to help you run up debt as fast as they can get the offers into your mailbox. This area is manageable and should allow you to fund retirement at a reasonable level (especially with employer matches in place)

30% of below debt to income – Below 30% you looking solid! This means you pay 30% or less on your debts each year. You could save 15% towards retirement, pay all your debt payments and still have 45% of your money for all your other junk.

So take minute, pull up your little list you created here: No shortcuts here, now let’s calculate you debt to income ratio. For the steps to do this read check out Calculate your Debt to Income Ratio and see where you stand. This should help you plan your next steps accordingly, remember the more information you have to work with the better decisions you can make.

My thoughts go out to this family as nobody wants to go through a foreclosure….then my FinancialFreak mind kicked in and my thoughts quickly changed

Another financial blog caught my attention recently (the name’s withheld because its a pretty good blog with a only a few questionable posts) The post I’m writing about was regarding the purchase of a new “quality” BBQ vs. buying a less expensive model. As a FinancialFreak that thinks long term this makes obvious sense to me as quality is often worth the extra price if you plan to use the item to its fullest. Buying quality may not be a responsible option though if you’re not in the proper financial situation to pay for it.

The blogger posts about how he wanted to buy the Weber E-310 BBQ which sells for close to $800 – a pretty sweet BBQ which he’d been saving for. He then goes on to say he made a better purchase and settled for a Char-Broil BBQ for a little less than $400 – again good job, you did some homework and saved some cash.

Here is what made me say what you were thinking…

The next post on the blog was titled “Housing Update: Short Sale, Foreclosure, etc.” I assumed this was a post about his opinions about the complicated housing market. Turns out this blogger has been trying to sell his house for more than 16 months and is currently on the verge of a foreclosure. Here’s a quote from his post:

Our savings is gone, our emergency fund is nil and I have cashed in about half of what little retirement we had put away. I am earning as much side income as I have time for and my wife babysits anywhere from one to five children (beside our own) everyday in order to make ends meet. At the moment, our credit is good and God has provided for our needs, but we are at the point where we are starting to incur major debt on behalf of this house.

So let me summarize here. He’s earning as much side income as he can, his wife is babysitting extra kids for money, he used his emergency and retirement funds to help weather the storm. If I were counseling this couple on their finances my advice to them would unquestionably be to spend the money they saved and invest in a new $400 BBQ. This is really the only option they have left to help prevent their family from being foreclosed on. If we were on the verge of foreclosure and I came home with a new $400 BBQ it would not be a pleasant conversation over freshly grilled steaks with my wife – who knows it might even be the last convesation we have as a couple!

My thoughts do go out to this family as nobody wants to go through a foreclosure….then my FinancialFreak mind kicked in and my thoughts quickly changed to “I wonder what sort of deal this guy will give me next month on his almost brand new $400 BBQ?” I better go back and bookmark that post!
